Lungile Poultry farm (Pty) Ltd is an integrated egg production farm using both automatic and manual equipment for egg production cycle through egg processing plant which involves receiving point of lay pullets (16 weeks of age) and begin to produce eggs from (17 weeks of age) and sales will begin on 17-18 week using specified feed for the development of eggs, water, ventilation and vaccination.

The project has now grown to a stage of producing its own layer pullets, rearing from day 0 to 17 weeks. This exciting project is the brainchild of Lungile Melvia Mkhize. Lungile Poultry farm (Pty)Ltd is set up to promote the creation of jobs, women and youth empowerment, economic development and poverty alleviation. It features key stakeholders such as the youth and women, employees of the project, customers, suppliers and the wider community.

Special Commodities

The project specializes in the production and sale of eggs. The project farms with layer chicken,a specified layer chicken, Hyline silver or Hyline brown hens that are placed in approved form of cages and provide them with a production method allowing them to produce eggs. Eggs produced are not fertile eggs but they are table eggs.Table eggs are those produced for the consumption of humans.

The eggs are graded and packaged according to the law of the Health Department. The project is located in Waterval, Mpumalanga. The start-up enterprise plans to build environmentally controlled chicken layer facility on portion 4 of the farm Waterval 34 JS which has a total extentof 8 hectares (ha). The farm is leased by Melvia Lungile Mkhize.

Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Techno Serve and AgriSeta provide farmer support to the project in the form of technical support. The farm has been assessed by the company CSIR as The part of their program to perform an EIA on the farm.

Background Of Project

Lungile Poultry Farm is the project started by Lungile Mkhize resident of Siyabuswa village under Dr J.S Moroka. She has a Degree in Agriculture from Cape Peninsula University of Technology. She is knowledgeable in poultry farming operations but she still requires some training to further advance his farming knowledge. Mpumalanga is regarded as one of the potential areas to practice agriculture due to its climatic conditions and rainfall reliability.

The area receives approximately 650mm of rain per annum and can reach a reading of 32 degree Celsius in summer and winter is cool at around temperature of 15 degree Celsius. The project is located in portion 4 of the farm Waterval 34 JS about 20 kilometers from Marble Hall town. Lungile Mkhize has realized that there is great demand for eggs by hotels, bed and breakfast providers, guest houses, holiday resorts and other related entities. These entities usually procure their eggs from as far as Pretoria and are inconvenienced financially as well as time wise by transportation activities and their associated costs and risks. There are currently few reliable egg producers and suppliers based in the outskirts of Siyabuswa.

Lungile Poultry Farm (PTY) Ltd wishes to exploit the opportunities presented by engaging in the production and sale of eggs. This shall be by means of purchasing ready to lay pullets, which shall be kept and nourished at the premises of the project during the productive phase of their lifespan. The eggs produced shall be collected, sorted, packaged and thereafter sold and distributed to the target market of the project which primarily encompasses, small to medium sized manufacturing related entities.

Processing Practices

Indigenous Knowledge

Lungile Poultry Farm uses housing and leading veterinary practices to
rear day-old chicks from Dekalb Amberlink and Hy-Line. During rearing of
these birds, a comprehensive vaccination program is followed, and high quality rations are fed to produce high quality ready to lay pullets.

Laying site

Lungile Poultry farm has two laying sites for a purpose of producing eggs, one site is caged-housing systems for commercial egg production and the other site is free range housing system for free range egg production. Our layer hens are transferred from our rearing facilities to our laying facilities around 17 to 18 weeks of age with aim to produce nutritious
eggs.

Nutrition

Optimal nutrition is provided and a strict lighting program is followed according to the age of the bird. Lighting programs are extremely important for optimal laying hens’ productions.

We keep them healthy by ensuring that the vaccination program is strictly followed. The vaccination program covers diseases such as: infectious bronchitis, Escherichia coli and Newcastle.
